Can I take the program virtually?
The Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis offers in-person training programs. While exceptions may be made for weather or illness, the program itself it in-person. Trainees would either reside in the state of Colorado, or commute to Colorado for classes for the 30 weeks per academic year. All trainees must be licensed in the state of Colorado. We do not offer student visas for overseas applicants. If in the analytic program, there are additional in-person requirements for the personal analysis, supervision, and analytic patients.
Do I need to have patients already?
All psychodynamic psychotherapy students will need access to at least a few patients to practice psychodynamic psychotherapy with on a weekly basis for the duration of the two year program.
Analytic candidates should have patients in their practice, but will work with assigned supervisors for analytic patients.
Is there an option to continue on to the psychoanalytic program after completing the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program?
In your second year of the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program (or after completion) you may apply for the analytic program (deadline is January 15th in even numbered years). There is a separate application, fee, eligibility requirements, and application process. About a quarter of our analytic candidates completed the PTP program.
I am already in a personal psychoanalysis. Do I need to change my analyst?
For the Analytic Program: The Denver Institute is a member of the American Association for Psychoanalytic Education (AAPE), whose standards we follow. The requirement is that the candidate (trainee in the program) in the analytic program is in a personal analysis, 4 to 5 times a week, with a training analysts that is certified by APsA or ABPsa, and generally faculty of our Institute who is a TA.
There are a lot of factors that go into deciding about your current analyst. Depending on who the current analyst is, their certifications, experience, etc, there is a waiver process, and that could take months for review, and is not guaranteed, so early application is suggested.
