1930s | Early 1930s - Swiss trained psychoanalyst, John D. Benjamin, arrived for "balcony treatment" for tuberculosis - making him the first psychoanalyst in Colorado. However Dr. Benjamin did not become involved with the University of Colorado Medical School until Herbert Gaskill arrived in 1953 | |
1940s | 1940s - the University of Colorado Medical School started to attract national attention when Psychiatry was taught for all four years in the medical school curriculum, had a liaison program that linked psychiatry to other services and established an outpatient psychiatric clinic for children. | |
1950s |
1953 - Dr. Herbert Gaskill became the chair of Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado and was instrumental in creating the Institute. Among his aims in building a good department were those of providing excellent residency training and gradually adding psychoanalytic training for residents and faculty members. At the time, only two analysts resided in Denver Dr. Jules Eisenbud and Dr. William Shanahan. 1955 - Dr. and Mrs. Sydney Margolin moved to Denver to join the Department of Psychiatry followed soon after by Dr. Janice Norton, Dr. Rene Spitz, Dr. Herbert Gaskill, Drs. Brandt and Eleanor Steele, Dr. Laurence Hall and Dr. Gaston Blom. |

1980s | 1985 - Affiliation Agreement with the Department of Psychiatry at University of Colorado signed 1988 - Child & Adolescent Analytic Program started under the directorship of Samuel Wagonfeld, M.D. with two psychiatrists, one psychologist and one psychiatric nurse. |

1992 - Denver Psychoanalytic Society starts a Psychodynamic Psychotherapies Program (PTP) 1994 - Psychoanalytic Library formed after the passing of Dr. Gaskill 1997 - First Award established in Dr. Brandt F. Steele's name |

2004 - Institute & Society website launched 2004 - Dr. Eduard Hitchman's analytic couch, that he used in Vienna, was donated by Dr. Carol Margolin, his granddaughter 2005 - Institute takes over PTP Program from Society |
